What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Here is another patient video testimonial from Trinergy Health!

Autism spectrum disorder is a group of illnesses characterized by impairments in social functioning along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior/interests/activities. Autism causes significant functional impairment for the child and the family.

Besides ABA (applied behavioral analysis to teach social and other adaptive skills to the child), conventional psychiatry approaches this illness from a chemical imbalance perspective and has routinely offered various classes of medicines to provide symptomatic relief for a targeted clusters of symptoms. This includes ADHD medications for poor focus and concentration, antidepressants for anxiety/ocd/deperession symptoms, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers for behavioral issues ranging from psychosis, internal preoccupation and emotional outbursts, and so on. Unfortunately, these medicines do not provide a definitive solution. Most recent meta analyses have shown that these medicines are not effective and they come with many side effects including a lifetime risk of diabetes.

Holistic Approach

Holistic Psychiatry uses a root cause approach. This means we strive to understand why this condition has arisen in the first place. The underlying root cause seems to be neural inflammation. But it’s not just the brain that is inflamed. It’s not a coincidence that more than 91% of ASD children have GI symptoms – constipation, diarrhea, food allergies and sensitivities, extreme pickiness with regard to eating, etc. Hence, treating the gut-brain axis has become the focus of intervention in my practice.

In this video, you can see and hear the enthusiasm of these parents who are seeing incredible improvements in their son’s health, translating into meaningful improvements in social functioning, academic functioning, improvements in focus, concentration, mood, behavior, etc.

All this in just 1-2 months time! According to the parents, the current 2019-20 school year is going exceptionally well for him. His teachers are very impressed with the extent and speed of his progress in school.

What did they have to do? “Remove the bad, provide the good.” A very basic functional medicine dictum.

If you or your loved one is struggling with symptoms of mental illness and are interested in an integrative approach that addresses the root cause of a person’s illness; which is about considering the whole person (and not just providing symptom relief), call Trinergy Health at (262) 955 6601 or contact us to schedule an appointment.
